Moonrise over North Hero Bay

This photo of the moonrise over North Hero Bay in North Hero, Vermont was taken July 31, 2015, and was too spectacular to pass up. People had stopped their cars at various spots all along Route 2 through the Islands to take photos of the moonrise over Lake Champlain’s Inland Sea.

‘Lake Champlain Islands’
A Photo History of the Islands

On July 3, 1609, French explorer Samuel de Champlain and his group canoed south from Canada into an expansive lake and found four islands. Those islands are now the Lake Champlain Islands. Located in the far northwest corner of the state, the islands are well known as a shoreline retreat for all of New England, with their small-town feel and picturesque farmlands. The Lake Champlain Islands are a tranquil, yet vibrant area of Vermont.

North Hero is at the center of the Lake Champlain Islands and is the Shire town (county seat) for Vermont’s Grand Isle County.

North Hero is the name of both the island and the village centrally located on thethat island.

Both North Hero and its larger neighboring island to the south (South Hero) were named for Revolutionary War heroes and founders of the Green Mountain Boys and the Republic of Vermont, Ethan and Ira Allen.

Canoeing at dusk on Lake Champlain.

Dusk can be a great time for canoeing. The lake is usually very calm, there is little motorized activity on the lake and, if you’re lucky, the bugs haven’t become too active yet. This photo of two neighbors paddling at sunset was one of those perfect times.

Lake Champlain offers many excellent opportunities for canoeing at dusk, dawn or any other time. Because the weather can change quickly on Lake Champlain, any boaters should pay careful attention to changing conditions.
