A recent study by a SUNY Plattsburgh professor shows that for every $1 invested in host fees and in-kind services, $88 was returned directly to the local economy. These tournaments generated over 2 million dollars last year, and created nearly 30 full time jobs.

The summer series of Plattsburgh-based professional bass fishing tournaments bring in $2.2 million annually in direct and indirect spending to the region, according to an economic impact study sponsored by the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, a division of the North Country Chamber of Commerce.

The economic impact study, done by Dr. Stephen Henry of SUNY Plattsburgh, reported:

• $2,186,655 generated annually in direct and indirect spending to the region

• Each tournament participant represented an average of 2.43 travelers, therefore bringing in an estimated 1,740 visitors to the community

• 29.2 full time regional jobs created

• Anglers stayed an average of 4.27 nights during each stay and 75 percent of the survey respondents made use of commercial lodging properties, including hotels, motels and campgrounds

Coast Guard Station Burlington conducts ice rescue training on Lake Champlain

Members of Station Burlington, Vermont’s ice rescue team adjust straps on their rescue board during training in Burlington Bay, Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016.

The ice rescue board uses a system of pulleys to make it easier for rescuers to pull a survivor out of the freezing water. Another method for getting a survivor out of the water is the self-help technique. This technique involves a team member walking the survivors through how to get themselves out of the water. The team member instructs the survivor to kick their legs until they are parallel with the ice ledge and use their arms to crawl forward.

Vermont bill would speed up public notice of sewage spills

Speed up public notice of sewage spills

Vermont shares a problem with other places around the country: sewage treatment plants that overflow into rivers and lakes after heavy rains or plant malfunctions.

Two state environmental officials said this past week it would cost more than $120 million to separate the sewage and storm water management systems in the 18 cities and towns where they are combined. Systems built in the 70’s and early 80’s send large volumes of runoff through sewage collection systems, with many actually designed to release excess flow to keep it from backing up into homes and businesses.

But now a lawmaker from Vergennes — a city that has seen more than its share of storm-triggered sewage spills — is pushing quicker public notification when such events occur.
