No fishing license will be needed for a Sept. 5 free fishing clinic hosted by the state Department of Environmental Conservation at John A. Brooks Memorial Fishing Pier on South Bay of Lake Champlain.

Bait and some fishing equipment will be available for use, though those with equipment were urged to bring it.

DEC fisheries staff will be available to teach participants about fish identification, angling equipment and techniques, safety and angling ethics

The 300-foot, handicapped accessible pier is located off Route 22, just north of the village of Whitehall. There is shallow water for panfish, and the deeper channel for fishing for bass, drum and perch.

The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dam removal to begin in Willsboro

Dam removal to begin in Willsboro

Work is scheduled to begin this week on the removal of the Saw Mill Dam on the Boquet River. It will also remove one of the last remaining links to its milling past.
Work on the $250,000 project, which is being bankrolled by the Lake Champlain Basin Program, is expected to be completed within 45 days.
Replacing the wooden structure would be cost prohibitive, said town officials, about four times the demolition costs.
The US Fish & Wildlife Service has said that following its removal, salmon will now be able to move more freely up the river, a measure that may boost fishing and tourism in the surrounding community.

The EPA’s targets require a more than 30 percent reduction in phosphorus flowing into the lake. The federal agency has looked closely at at the state’s implementation plan and is confident that the measures proposed will meet the targets. The plan aims to reduce phosphorus from a variety of sources including farm fields, paved surfaces and dirt roads.

Critics acknowledge that targets are a positive step, but have significant concerns with parts of the state’s implementation plan… (MORE)
