As rain falls down, the amount of sewage spilling into Lake Champlain goes up.
According to the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, this occurs in communities with older infrastructures where stormwater and sewage pipes are combined, known as combined sewer overflows or CSOs. Officials say the pipes have limited capacity and with the added rainwater they can’t handle the increase and overflow. Cities like Rutland, Vergennes and Burlington have the highest amounts of spillage into the lake.
